Glynn County Schools is applying for the 21st CCLC (Century Community Learning Center) Grant. This grant is applicable to grades kindergarten through 5th grade students attending Altama, Burroughs-Molette and Goodyear elementary schools.
“This application creates an opportunity to extend learning for students in academics and to promote healthy activities for social development. Combining skilled teachers and a continuing partnership with the Boys and Girls Club for enrichment activities creates time students can look forward to beyond the school day to learn and grow,” said Dr. Valerie Whitehead, executive director of strategy and innovation for Glynn County Schools.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Program, authorized under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), received its first appropriation in 1996. The 21st CCLC Program funding has supported the development of community learning centers established by public schools, community-based organizations (CBOs), and private schools with the assistance of community partners.
Federal and state laws guide the implementation of the 21st CCLC Program. Federal funds are appropriated through Georgia’s annual budget. The federal guidelines also expand state and local accountability for student academic achievement and emphasizes the importance of adopting scientifically-based research practices.
“Curricular choices for math and reading are selected carefully to engage students in learning activities they can enjoy and connect to the learning they experience during the school day,” Whitehead said.
The grant application is intended to create the Afterschool Matters program at the above-named elementary schools. The purpose of the 21st Century After School Enrichment program is to provide local flexibility in the establishment or expansion of community learning centers that provide students in grades k-5 with academic enrichment opportunities. Activities are designed to complement students’ regular academic program, literacy and related educational development services for the families of these students, and a safe environment for students participating in the programs.
